Have you ever considered online voting, online privacy, online gambling, ecommerce taxation by states, or proper filters for children to prevent the viewing of pornography? If you have ever even considered these issues or the debates behind both sides of the arguments, than I sure have a good book to recommend to you. The name of the book is: “The Information Age – Current Controversy Series,” Edited by James D Torr, Greenhaven Press, New York, NY, (2003), pp. 188, ISBN: 0-7377-1186-8.
There are far too many people in the world that see automation and technology as evil, especially considering what it has done for our nation’s productivity and how it has lifted our quality of life and standard of living. But in case you are unconvinced then maybe you need more ammo for your POV or point of view, and/or you’d be open minded enough to hear why I know for a fact how much automation has done for our society and civilization.
Some say that anti-social behavior is a bad thing, but if you occasionally jump out of the mainstream of society and stop listening to the mass media you might actually see something that no one else does. Further, an anti-social person is liable to easily reject the so-called “wisdom of the mob” and purposely go the opposite way. For this, they are often, no not always, but often enough rewarded, for they are thinking far outside the box. Now then let’s use the stock market as an example.
Before retirement, I was a franchisor founder, and that meant I had to wear many hats, and perhaps the most difficult hat I had to wear was one of coach. Perhaps, it is for that reason that when I hear someone say that they are a coach rather than a consultant, I look at them with a stern eye. You see, I know it’s very trendy these days to be a coach, and everyone who used to be a consultant is now calling themselves a coach.
Not long ago, the European Union and the European Central Bank announced to the investment community that they were going to do a stress test on all their banks to see if they could perform, and remain solvent in the event of any further economic calamity. Wouldn’t you know, that when the test results were completed only 7 of the 91 banks were said to be below the minimum standards. Therefore, this stress test was overwhelming success, or at least we are led to believe this.
It is a reality that crime in the United States is way down, and that violent crime is also down. So too, are crimes against women? Why you ask? Several reasons are speculated, but personally I believe it is due to all these personal tech devices with digital camera and video. A mobile society with rapid communication, plus the fast police response associated with that same communication technology, gives criminals reason to temper their behavior.
Rubenstein’s often uncanny ability to seize opportunity out of crisis, makes him one with the Chinese Symbol which signifies both. And the Carlyle Group, which has had its share of navigating the last global economic Tsunami and the turbulent waters which pervade both free-markets, and state run capitalist copies has reverted back to dead reckoning. Luckily, it seems to be working.
There sure seems to be a lot of bad news and economic reporting in our newspapers, and TV cable stations which play 24/7 and it is immediately obvious that bad news spreads a lot faster than good news. Obviously, the news media knows this, and therefore they advertise negative news over good news by 5 to 1 margin, even if they claim to balance it out. Therefore, since the media owns the minds of the people, we should expect folks to be more depressed, uptight, and consumer confidence to continue to sag.
